Yet Another Successful Collaboration with HIOSA, our Official Partner for Holy Innocents' Idol 2007

Holy Innocents' Idol 2007, or HI Idol for short, is an inaugural school-wide competition cum music extravaganza through which the HIHS student population uncovered and crowned a deserving teenage singing sensation. Through this article, the organisers of HI Idol would like to express their deepest appreciation for HIOSA (Holy Innocents' Old Students Association). Without its close collaboration and generous support, HI Idol would not have taken off. Many aspects of this competition such as prizes and stage design have received invaluable assistance in the form of sponsorship and constructive feedback provided by our dearest Alumni, especially Mr. Ken Tay Tien Loon.

When asked if HIOSA would continue its involvement in future HI Idol competitions, HIOSA Chairperson Mr. John Lim Cho Lee replied with great assurance: "Of course we will! This competition develops the self-confidence of our juniors. It encourages students who are not academically-inclined to step out and showcase their singing talents. I believe HIHS students do not have many opportunities to display such talents and the competition is another opportunity for them to do so. So it is also about the old generation lending the new one a helping hand!"

Lee Wei Song School of Music Principal and HIHS Alumnus Mr. Lee Wei Song also supports HI Idol. On 11 June 2007, he invited the Top 10 HI Idol Finalists to his school, where they received free vocal training conducted by his school's instructors. He hoped the Finalists had picked up techniques that have improved their vocal ability, with which they can carve out a career in the music industry. Mr. Lee beamed with enthusiasm when he was asked if he would continue as a guest judge for the Grand Finals: "Sure! I'll be more than happy to do that!"

Our school leaders were equally heartened by HIOSA's involvement in HI Idol. Holy Innocents' High School Principal Mrs. Pauline Wong told me she would not have seen the most ecstatic audience in her life without this competition: "Our own students! They were the best ever!" she exclaimed. Vice-Principal Ms. Christina Michael felt that Mr. Ken Tay's recommendation to dress the Finalists in Fox was spot-on. Some students probably gained a better of understanding of what smart causal means after watching the Grand Finals, she added with a smile.

Since its formation, HIOSA has been a steadfast partner of HIHS, actively involved in numerous community-building activities and initiatives. Its time-tested and unstinting support is a pillar of HIHS...yesterday, today and tomorrow.

So once again, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, HIOSA!

I Love Music.

A relaxant yet a depressant. Music can affect how we feel. Therefore, we should learn to select the "right song" for the "right time". Personally, I love songs that are sung by strong vocalists, with meaningful lyrics and soothing melodies. When I was a young child, my mother introduced the songs of veteran powerhouses like Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and Toni Braxton to me.

I grew to like Christina Aguilera, who was known as the "little girl with big voice". She began singing at a young age, but her voice was on par with Whitney Houston's. Now she is referred to as the "voice of her generation" because she possesses a four-octave vocal range. She is able to hit notes in the whistle register with that big voice of hers. Her songs are also bear much meaning and raw emotion. The classic Beautiful gives people who suffer from low self-esteem and anorexia nervosa a booster shot of encouragement.

Alecia Beth Moore, better known as Pink, is another favourite singer of mine. Dear Mr. President and Who Knew are worth a listen. Their lyrics are painfully honest and sung using a great voice.

I'm also into Evanescence and Linkin Park. Both bands have strong vocalists in Amy Lee and Chester Bennington, complemented by heady guitar riffs and heavy drum beats. Check out Lithium and My Immortal by Evanescence, as well as Numb and What I've Done by Linkin Park.

To sum up, I'm into power and emotional depth when it comes to music. Therefore, some genres like Techno are not my cup of tea. After all, an individual's taste in music is dependent on his or her personal preferences and choices.

When HIHS meets LWSSOM

Before leaving for Lee Wei Song School of Music, the Top 10 Finalists were asked to pose for candid group photos just outside the General Office in stylish clothes. Mr Shahrom was the photographer for the day.

Then we began our journey from HIHS to LWSSOM on a chartered bus, where I interviewed some Finalists on their feelings about the workshop to come.

It seems like the atmosphere in the bus was charged with the Finalists' enthusiasm & excitement!

Here is what Ms Tan Bee Choo has to say: "Basically, we hope that they will further develop their stage presence & learn to choose suitable songs for their respective performances during the Grand Finals. It is great for them to attend formal vocal lessons. If they want to pursue their interest in singing, they must learn to sing better."

Upon arriving at LWSSOM, we were warmly greeted by Zhen Liang, who brought us around the school. It has 3 classrooms equipped with professional equipment, 4 classy recording studios and a dance studio. The tour left everyone in awe.

After which, the Finalists were divided into 2 groups, which meant 5 persons per group/classroom. To warm up their voices, they began with lip drills, which left everyone laughing shyly. Then they were asked to face a mirror and hum according to the notes played by a main instructor on the keyboard.

The third thing the Finalists did was singing progressively higher, pitch-wise. Subsequently, they were posed questions about their personalities and usual choice of songs before taking turns to sing excerpts of their songs in front of the mirror. This activity was meant to boost their self-confidence. The main instructor also advised them to make connections between song lyrics to their lives as well as sing with conviction. In addition, other instructors taught them how to sing with emotion and some simple dance moves.

Every Finalist received an opportunity to sing his or her song with musical accompaniment when the time came for both groups to come together. The movable wall separating both classroom was retracted; both classrooms became one. Grace was the first to start the ball rolling with a beautiful rendition of 我要快乐 by Taiwanese singer, Zhang Hui Mei. Wei Qi was up next. She sang 七十二变 by Jolin Tsai and amazed everyone with wondrous moves - definitely GROOVY! The instructors shared their comments after every performance and gave everyone tips.

At the end of the workshop, Mr Lee Wei Song entered the combined classroom! The finalists were absolutely delighted and screamed with joy. All of us took pictures with him. He even requested his assistant to take a group photo of us together with him, so that he could frame it up in his school! He also revealed that he was a member of two CCAs, Scouts and YCS, when he was a student of HIHS.

We left the school content and satisfied. I'm sure the Finalists gained lots of experience and honed their vocal skills! To end this entry, I will quote what Mr Lee told us before he bid us goodbye: "圣婴万岁! (Victory to Holy Innocents' High School!)"

Numerous members of the public have criticised his music as portraying violence towards women and degrading them. However, despite the bad publicity, Eminem has hit success many a time.

His third major album, The Eminem Show, was released to the public in 2002 and was a huge hit, selling well over a million copies in just the first week of its release! His lastest album is a joint compilation with a few other artistes who are new to the music industry. As Eminem describes it, ''The Re-Up is about these new artists...''

A Test Of Fame, Or Talent?

One HI Idol. Selected by the masses of HIHS. Selected for his or her singing talents. Or is it?

Is HI Idol really a singing contest, or is it a popularity contest? Does the deciding power, the students, really base their votes on the contestant's singing? Or do they vote based on the contestant's looks?

It is an issue that transcends the contest. While the supposed main objective of the contest is the voices of the contestants, we all know that it is not the case. Take Singapore Idol, or the Project Superstar as an example. All four winners are male. While that may be attributed to their singing prowess, certainly there are also other reasons. There is actually only one simple reason.

In a contest of popularity, certainly the females would vote more. It is obvious in the trend today, that females tend to idolize their male counterparts more than their female ones. It is an undeniable fact, and the results reflect that. So if the contest is really all about looks and popularity, what does it mean?

It means that those shy, average looking students would be at a clear disadvantage. If popularity wins votes, wouldn't it mean those students who have talent in singing, but are generally unnoticed, would have a much harder time than those who are popular, who may not be as talented? Wouldn't it contribute more to the possible inferior mindset of those "average and unnoticed" students?

But isn't the contest meant to showcase the students' singing talent, to build up their self-confidence, and to allow them to gain experience which would be otherwise impossible to learn, from any textbook?

Then again, like a coin, there are always two sides to a problem. While the objectives of the contest may have been grayed and blurred, the contest also exposes the contestants to the workings of the real world, the society they will inevitably end up in. The world where talent alone would not help one to survive. They would definitely have to learn to garner interpersonal skills and learn to improve their EQ, which, isn't quite a bad thing.

As an audience, and also part of the student body, I feel that while the contest may be one of popularity and looks, Students, should definitely vote wisely. After all, it is and always will be, a singing contest.

So vote wisely, and vote carefully.

There we have it, the Top 1o Finalists!

On 27 April, the school unveiled the Top 10 Finalists in the packed school hall. The Assembly Programme was hosted by Bryan and Xin Hui from 4 Humility. It kicked off with a treat for everyone: a behind-the-scenes "MV" created by Andrew from 4 Faith:

The aspiring singers and judges shared the limelight in the next 2 videos that followed. I was quite disappointed when I heard Mr. Maran emphasise the importance of choosing "the right song". This means that some singers chose songs that did not bring out the best of their vocal abilities.

That moment eventually came. Bryan and Xin Hui began to introduce the Finalists; the whole school listened quietly for every name. After a name was announced, the corresponding Finalist rose from wherever he or she was sitting and joined the emcees onstage. Every Finalist received cheers of encouragement and shouts of excitement as he or she walked down the centre aisle towards the stage.

Unfortunately, most Finalists appeared to be rather shy during their respective Question & Answer sessions with the emcees. However, when asked to sing in front of the school, they did so with much charisma and confidence! Every song ended with applause and roars of approval, underlining the huge amount of support that the Finalists were receiving from the school.

She's the one in the middle.

After the Assembly Programme, I spoke to Camille Tan from 5 Faith (who is also the founder and chairman of the school's Mass Choir) to find out how she felt when she was onstage. "I was very nervous. I had a sore throat, so I didn't think I couldn't make it. I was trying my best not to cough and ended up not delivering the song well," she said. Have more confidence in yourself, Camille!

When interviewed for her feelings on the Assembly Programme, veteran teacher Ms. Laura Lim's response was: "It was interesting and enjoyable. The singers' vocals are pretty strong and most of them are able to carry a tune. But one cannot really demonstrate his or her full talent simply by singing a part of a song."

I then asked if she had any inspiring words for the Finalists. "If they really like singing, continue to do so as a hobby or try to carve a career out of it! Our former students Pierre Png and Chew Chor Meng have unleashed their talents and are successful actors now. Lee Wei Song also has a music school of his own too! So I believe there are more hidden talents in our student population," she replied. Words that are very true, as a matter of fact!

Enthusiastic? Or not?

Sadly, Serene Ng from 2 Integrity felt that the school's overall response can improve: "Our students were not enthusiastic at all!" The bubbly student also said, "Some of the Finalists have very nice vocals! Do your best everyone! If you really want to come in Top 3, go for it!"

HI Idol Logo & Set Design Competition

idolise presents a much belated (better late than never?) showcase of the Top 3 entries of the HI Idol Logo & Set Design Competition held in January 2007.

Readers, you are probably well acquainted with our official logo:

However, you probably don't know it faced stiff competition from two other entries.

The logo submitted by Lenson Sim, Ng Hui Joo and Zheng Ming Hui from 3 Integrity was created using Gimp Version 2.2. The group specifically chose colors that represented the four houses (Blue Eagles, Green Hawks, Red Kites and Yellow Falcons) of our school, hence their logo is bright and pleasing to the eye. A variety of fonts, brushes and rendering processes were brought into play.

However, this design failed to "catch the eyes" of the judges, Mr. Rizal and Ms. Jacqueline Nai. We think it is partly because they found its guitar motif potentially misleading. After all, HI Idol isn't a competition that requires singers to play musical instruments. That point aside, the logo is supposed to take the form of a banner hung way above stage level, so it is quite visible when viewed from a distance. Indeed, this trio deserves much commendation for its original ideas and hard work.

Budding designers, next up is a logo that illustrates what we consider "split-second inspiration". Liang Yap's design is compact and creative, with a microphone cleverly positioned between "HI" and "Idol".

The colors used are blue and white, which compliments the school. Although the logo looks simple, it exudes charm and grace. Praiseworthy.

Unleash Your Potential As An Emcee

Wit, confidence and articulation. These are some qualities of a good emcee. On 7 March 2007, they were on display during the "hunt" for potential emcees to host various events of our school's very own music extravaganza – HI Idol. Secondary 4 students Joan, Justin and Xinhui served as judges.

Out of the other fifteen students who turned were several uncut diamonds. "So unfair, so nervous," giggled bubbly Michelle Leong from 4 Diligence, who was the first to face the judges. Michelle appeared inexperienced, but she sure pulled through with a decent performance. From where I was seated, I could tell that she was trying very hard to stifle all shenanigans and concentrate on her audition. To her credit, she did fairly well.

King of all emcees?

Next up was Andi from 3 Faith. He was very much the "boomer" and perhaps the loudest of them all. Being a "boomer" isn't necessarily a bad thing, but to me it became quite annoying. Well, in my opinion, an emcee need not "boom". Ryan Seacrest is an excellent example. However, Andi still met the judges' expectations – the fluency and power – so hats down to him!

Then came Anne Marie (3 Unity), Jie Ying (3 Humility), Wayne (4 Humility), Issac (3 Faith)...so on and so forth. Some were clear and precise, whereas others appeared unobtrusive and rather – unfortunately – shy. Folks like Anne Marie were exuberant and responsive to cues supplied by the judges, embodying good emceeing.

I felt some students had faced much fewer setbacks during their respective routines because they were more experienced. Nonetheless, it is still up to the boisterous and encouraging judges to decide who's in and who's...well, obviously not. All in all, everyone did well. So when you think of emceeing in the future, think wit, confidence, articulation...and Holy Innocents' High School.

On the eve of the 2nd Round Auditions, idolise presents bluefreakgurl's personal recount of the 1st Round, Day 1:

A warm hug from a friend. (:

At 2.35pm, I arrived at the School Library. My first reaction was whoa! A long line of students had formed outside the library; they were the aspiring singers were waiting for further instructions. I was ushered into the library as I had my official pass on. Soon, singers began to fill the library. With each singer given a number, they waited anxiously for their turn. One by one, they went in and come out. Some either showed no emotion or smiled. Others simply shrugged and said "Wildcard" when I asked them how their auditions had gone.

Is she your next HI Idol?

One girl was asked to return to the Audition Room by the judges, Ms. Jill Lee and Mr. Maran. She then sang again! Ernawati Sulasteri from 3 Faith was that special girl. Before her audition, she was a nervous wreck. This was what she had to say before her audition: "I feel very nervous but I will do my best." Nervousness did not turn up; Sulasteri sang beautifully.

When interviewed, Nicholas Bong from 1 Hope told me that he had gotten a Wildcard. "I felt nervous before entering the room. Now I'm worried because I'm not sure if I can get in." Others who were given the green light had gleeful words to share. "I was very happy and I was screaming for joy, from the inside." Stephanie Lee of 1 Unity quipped. Well, if you were to scream in the library, you'd get kicked out. ;)

Airil, the A-B-C man.

Of the people who had gotten the Wildcard, one singer stood out from the rest. He was quite satisfied with the verdict from the judges. When asked if he had done a good job, Muhd. Airil of 3 Integrity said, "No, I didn't come prepared. I entered the competition merely to accompany my friend. Beside, I was actually planning to sing the A-B-C song!" The alphabet song?! That can't be true!

Compared to Day 2, the first day was livelier. I poked my nose into many people's business on both days, and left the library tired but happy with the knowledge that Holy Innocent's High School was brimming with singing talent. Before I sign out, I would like to congratulate the singers who got through to Round 2. To those who didn't, don't be discouraged. I'm sure you will realise your true talent someday.

Okay, I have said enough! I will sign out with a favourite tagline of both Ms. Jill Lee and Mr. Maran:

"You have the voice."

HI Idol's first briefing for aspiring singers

The response to the first Briefing for Aspiring HI Idols held on 1 March 2007 was fantastic. Many turned up, including some Secondary 4 students who had to attend extra classes after school. They were ushered into AVA Room 1 by the Publicists. To our surprise, everyone settled down quickly and kept their voices down. From the smiles on the students' faces, it was evident that they were excited to hear what Mr. Raymond Yeo had to say about the singing competition.

Mr. Yeo mainly touched on how a typical singer's first audition would unfold, and how singers should behave during their auditions. The overall tidiness of a singer was greatly emphasized. Singers were permitted to bring lyric sheets along with them into the audition room. However, it was made clear that they would be better off without it.

Now, Mr. Yeo was not the only one doing all the talking; students too were heard popping questions. An Upper Secondary boy asked, "Mr. Maran is one of the judges. Would singers performing Mandarin songs be at a disadvantage?" The reply was a curt "No". Like many in the audience, we were surprised when it was revealed that Mr Maran understood basic Chinese.

Now that the line-up for the second round of auditions has been published, let us pray that the 42 survivors won't allow any ill feelings to affect their upcoming performances. Best of luck, everyone!

Official Launch Of HI Idol 2007

dreadnought18 relives the Official Launch of HI Idol 2007.

The launch was a huge success. Campus Superstar 2006 judge Mr. Peter Tan graced the event. Held in the school hall full of enthusiastic students, the air charged with excitement. After all, we seldom get to see performances as good as what was lined up on l6 February 2007.

The dancers of the HIHS Modern Dance Club kicked things off synchronized and dazzling hip-hop moves, which drew louder cheers. The cheers turned into applause when the emcees for the day, Justin (4 Diligence '07), Joan and Xinhui (both from 4 Humility '07) took the stage. Infected by the enthusiasm of the emcees, everyone was also getting his or her groove on.

That's him! :)

The emcees' introduction of Mr. Tan, affectionately addressed as "Peter Lao Shi", was accompanied by whistles. He has released his latest album 萬語千言 recently, which can be still purchased from Ms. Jacqueline Nai at SGD$15. More importantly, he came to HIHS to help launch HI Idol 2007!

Mr. Tan serenaded the audience with his melodious voice, prompting some students to wave their hands in the air and others to clap along. Midway through his second song, he received a bouquet of flowers from three admirers.

All in all, Mr. Tan's repertoire of songs - English, Chinese & Tamil - was impressive, and his ability to pull off a Michael Buble left us awestruck. Many of us were clearly enjoying ourselves. After Stefanie Sun's 眼神, he offered aspiring singers some insightful advice before leaving the stage. His words of encouragement would have left a deep impression on most of them. It was the best way to wrap up his enjoyable concert, surely.

HI Idol 2007 looks to be on the road to success.

4 - 6pm, Monday, 5 March 2007

> 1st Round of Auditions (Day 1) for Singers at the Library <

UPDATED! The judges for this round are Miss Jill Lee & Mr Maran. Singers are expected to come prepared to sing either an English or Mandarin song. For your information, it has been decided that Mrs Geraldine Tay will join Miss Lee and Mr Maran for the 2nd Round of Auditions.

Both judges will assess the singers in these qualities: (a) Vocal Quality, (b) Pitch, (c) Sense of Rhythm & (d) Presentation. They DO NOT require the singers to (i) remember all the lines (they can sing with the help of lyric sheets), (ii) sing the entire song (they will stop singing when asked to do so by the judges) and (iii) sing from the song from the 1st line (they can decide the starting point of their performances).

The judges also have appealed for calmness and composure from the singers who will stand and sing before them.

Last but not least, the judges will announce their joint verdict at the end of every audition. The verdict is either (a) "Yes, you are through to the next round!" or (b) "You're a Wildcard. Await the Final Results, which will be announced on 8 March 2007, and continue to believe in yourself!"

THE VERY SIMPLE VALENTINE'S DAY CONCERT

Some teachers and students came together for a musical bonanza on Saint Valentine's Day. Love is the very essence of this special day. Add live music, a supportive audience...and what's the result? A total rock-romantic fest. In short, it was an awesome experience. The performers, their music and enthusiasm - everything was perfect.

THE VERY SIMPLE VALENTINE'S DAY CONCERT kicked started at 3.15pm at The Space, and the band of teachers led by Mr. Eugene Tan was greeted with a warm round of applause. Things began to heat up once Mr. Tan showcased his melodic vocals. The band mesmerised the audience with their unique blend of love songs.

Next up were 3 former students who kept everyone on the edge of their seats with breakdancing skills.

The audience was then entertained by classical musicians from 3 Integrity '07. This group of talented young musicians performed My Heart Will Go On, the theme song of the popular love movie Titanic.

Last but not least, lead singer Mr. Raymond Yeo came onstage with the other talented members of Rubberband. Out of the four songs it performed, my personal favourite is Blink 182's I Miss You. I am sure many in the crowd were blown away by it too. In my opinion, this song was one with heart and soul.

All in all, the concert was a colossal blast. Music fans cheered on till the end, and I must admit that this concert is undeniably the best one held in the school so far this year. It was definitely a treat for all and worth all the anticipation.

Friends look on as another 'victim' falls for the 'scam'

The Chinese Lunar New Year Celebrations took place in school 2 Fridays ago. However, that wasn't the only major event of 16 February. Another that many students of HIHS were looking forward to took place that particular day - The registration of singers for HI Idol 2007!

The Registration Booth set up at the Parade Square attracted the attention of many. Be it Lower Secondary or Upper Secondary students, everyone were very enthusiastic about this event. Curious onlookers were also spotted in the vicinity.

Many who visited the booth comprised interested singers who thought they have potential to become the new HI Idol and came to register for the singing competition. However, the registration process didn't just stop at aspiring singers. Emcees were also registered to host upcoming HI Idol related events. In a nutshell, the response from everyone was simply overwhelming!

Mr. Peter Tan, a famous music teacher who has groomed many talented singers such as Stefani Sun and served as one of the judges for Campus Superstar 2006, performed in the hall later that day. He sung 3 melodious songs, 2 from his latest album, which had everyone clapping away and cheering him on. After his amazing performance, we feel that students of HIHS are now more enthusiastic about HI Idol than ever before.

1. Registration of Aspiring Singers & Enthusiastic Emcees

2. Submission of Registration Forms

UPDATED: All aspiring singers and enthusiastic emcees are reminded to submit their forms to any Publicist (there are 10 of them) by Thursday, 29 February 2007. All Publicists can be identified by their orange lanyards and accreditation passes. Please refrain from submitting your forms to any of the Teachers-in-Charge, because we have assigned the Publicists to handle the registration process.

Late submissions will not be entertained.

3. Preparation for the 1st Round of Auditions (or Elimination)

All registered singers and emcees will face the uh axe this term in Week 10.

Every singer will perform an English or a Mandarin song of his/her choice without musicial accompaniment, while every emcee does the following:

(a) "introduce a singer or band of their choice onstage",
(b) "conduct a short interview with the performer/s", and
(c) "thank the performer/s at the end of the performance".

Both groups of students will also answer a couple of questions before or after (it really depends on the judge/s) their performances.

Now We Have It Too - HI Idol

America has American Idol, the singing competition that has groomed many talents such as Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard and Fantasia, whose stars have all risen to astounding heights.

Singapore has Singapore Idol, which has also uncovered talents such as Taufik Batisah and Hady Mirza.

And now, Holy Innocents' High School too has one - HI Idol - for pupils with great singing talent. Being new and fresh to everyone in school, HI Idol, has caused quite a stir. Everyone has an opinion of this competition, be it bad or good. For this entry, we obtained the opinions of several students and teachers.

Ms Chong Yong Shing was all thumbs-up when asked about how she feels about HI Idol:

"I am very excited. I want to hear for myself the singing talents of HI students. I think that the winner of HI Idol will probably be an Upper Secondary boy... But I will definitely support the girls!"

And Ms Jill Lee was ecstatic when interviewed:

"I can't wait for the auditions to begin! I'm really pleased with the amount of money the sponsors has actually pumped in us so far. Upper Secondary students definitely stand a higher chance of winning it...because they're older and probably have more singing experience."

Mrs Chang Poh Joo was more than happy to accept our interview:

"HI Idol sounds fun and interesting! I think an Upper Secondary student will win it. The singer's maturity will be a big factor."

While teachers had only positive things to say about HI Idol, some students begged to differ and offered somewhat negative but constructive comments.

Huang Tai Yang of 2 Humility was excited about the launch of HI Idol! But she wasn't too happy with one thing:

"I want to be able to watch every stage of HI Idol LIVE, instead of just the Grand Finals. In this way, some students who are not interested in HI Idol at first will soon begin to look forward to the next stage. And I think an Upper Secondary boy will win the competition. If not, a Lower Secondary girl."

Ng Yu Jun, who is also from 2 Humility, only had this to say about the future winner of HI Idol.
"I think an Upper Secondary girl will definitely win it!"

Derrick Lim from 1 Integrity seemed confused:

"I don't know... I think HI Idol is good and bad in different ways. An Upper Secondary student will win it? I don't know!"

Although people have different opinions when it comes to HI Idol, we know that in time to come, many of them will enjoy and love it! (:

The Official Word (According to the Vice-Principal)

"Tough" would be the word to describe my interview with Miss Christina Michael, usually addressed by her appointment VP (Vice-Principal). But fortified with perseverance, I finally got through to her after an arduous 'chase' of five days. I find her answers enlightening and constructive. Students who are deciding to sign up for the singing competition should definitely read on.

idolise: Why did the school decide to approve HI Idol 2007?

Miss Michael: It stems from the belief that there are many forms of intelligence - logical, visual, musical, kinesthetic, etc. In school, we often are too focused on certain types of intelligence - we don't devote enough time or resources on developing the other forms of intelligence. We also know we have very talented students in our midst (teachers as well!!)…So why not create an opportunity for students to showcase their musical talents? Hence, its support of HI Idol.

idolise: In what ways does it benefit the student body?

Miss Michael: Why do we always have to idolize pop stars from other parts of the world? Why don't we start by looking within our school for undiscovered talent? The way the event is structured, students with some potential are given training by professionals before their appearances in the Grand Finals. This is thanks to the support of our sponsors, members of the HI Old Students Association.

idolise: Do you think it is worthwhile to sign up for it? Why?

Miss Michael: Even if you have little talent, it's great exposure. Just going through the paces in the various rounds or getting involved in the background work are learning experiences. For the participants, the pressure of performing and training helps build up confidence and composure. Only those who can take the "heat" will shine in the Finals. So everyone involved in the event in some way benefits, not just the winners.

idolise: If you were a student of HIHS, would you do the same? What are your reasons in doing so?

Miss Michael: Unfortunately, I don't have that much talent in singing. During my school days, a few friends and I did go for school-based talent quests though. It was more for the fun of it than anything else. After all, school's not just about books and tests.

idolise: What can we expect from the competition?

Miss Michael: We can expect to see many winners emerge, not just one. We can expect loads of fun, great showmanship, lots of kinship, some glitches, some tears and some frazzled nerves.

idolise: What qualities do you think the winner should possess?

Miss Michael: Oodles and oodles of confidence, a tremendous learning attitude, a dollop of talent, a dash of humility and at the core, an ability to think on the spot. It's probably confidence and composure that will distinguish the winner from the other contestants.

idolise: In your opinion, what do you think is the X-Factor?

Miss Michael: Knowing how to "play to the stands". Being able to understand what the audience want and enjoy, and giving them that and more. It's all about knowing how to win its support.

idolise: Are you excited about HI Idol 2007? What Habits of Mind do you think the contestants will display?

Miss Michael: Please perform before your friends and family before entering the auditions and listen to their advice. Listen to yourself with honesty - if you think you don't have what it takes, don't be too hard on yourself. For those who do have some talent, use this as an opportunity for learning and development.

Quite a few visitors to this blog have indicated that they would like to have more information about the entire event through our first online poll (Are you excited about HI Idol?), so here is some for everyone to chew on:

1. The Result of the HI Idol 2007 Logo & Set Design Competition

UPDATED: The result of this competition will be announced on 16 February, which is also the day our school celebrates Chinese Lunar New Year (CLNY). Our Principal Mrs. Pauline Wong will be presenting the prize to the creator(s) of the winning entry in the morning.

2. Registration of Singers in February

UPDATED: The Publicists of the HI Idol Student Media Team will overseeing the registration of singers at a booth set up (probably near the General Office, venue to be confirmed) on 16 February too, during the CLNY Carnival. Registered singers will be given information about the 1st round of auditions to be held in March. For example:

Every singer will perform an English or a Mandarin song of his/her choice without musicial accompaniment during his/her auditions.

In addition, students who are interested in HI Idol in any way should visit the booth. You are welcome to speak to any Publicist or teacher (including myself) on duty to find out more about the entire event.

The registration of singers does not end on 16 February. Singers can still register for the singing competition at the same booth from 21 to 23 February.

3. Registration of Master-of-Ceremonies (MCs) in February

The Publicists will also be registering students who are keen to host events related to HI Idol, including the 2 rounds of auditions and the Grand Finals, on the same day. Very simply:

MCs host events involving HI Idol contestants and get the crowd working in between performances. Best of all, they get to announce the results of the HI Idol 2007 Grand Finals!

Registered students will given information about the auditions to be held in late February.

HI Idol: The Gateway to be Different

There are times when we feel like we are just a brick in the wall, bearing little significance. Bound by cement and just like any other brick, we long for an avenue to express ourselves; to have our individual talents recognised.

HIHS is organising a talent feature programme, HI Idol, in which students gifted in singing and performing are encouraged to take part. Mounting the stage, to many, represents harsh fluorescent lighting beating down on the body that is fast diffusing into the atmosphere at the very same time! However, Anne Neo from 2 Charity begs to differ. "To me, it is a form of communication with the audience" was her explanation of what a stage performance meant to her.

So what else do the rest have to say about HI Idol? Is this competition beneficial to us, an event to be enjoyed by all? Or will it simply bring to mind what some would call "exposing the harrowing elements of secondary school life"? A few opted for neutrality. Many others developed a more opinionated complex. One believes that it presents students a chance to "realise their potential and shine".

Having said all that, perhaps HI Idol is not just a showcase of talents? Perhaps it is meant to remind us that we are all different in our own unique ways? Perhaps it is meant to instil in us the need for a greater appreciation of the performing arts?

Perhaps it is meant to help us come to a realisation that we are more than just a brick in the wall.

Beneath HI Idol 2007

Music is a passion for many. Sadly, most passions will just remain as fantasies, not meant to be fulfilled. But HIHS will give a chance to those who wish to fulfil their dreams of being on stage and performing for a "live" audience. And that's where HI Idol 2007 comes into place! HI Idol has the basic fundamentals of a singing competition. By far, it is one of the most well-funded events ever held in the school. Quite a few teachers and students are involved in this event, which tentatively will be held on 20 July.

What's more, there is also a separate competition for students who wish to design the official logo as well as set for the Finals. The winning entry would bring great satisfaction to the person or team behind it.

When asked if HI Idol would benefit the student body, Lena Ng from 2 Humility gave a "no" as her answer. Her reason? Students might neglect their studies, especially if they had to prepare for auditions. However, Clarissa Thin from 2 Charity begs to differ. She thinks HI Idol is something students should look forward to, because school isn't just about textbooks and studying. And when asked what some of the qualities the winner of HI Idol 2007 should possess are, many seem to agree on the following 3: A positive attitude, a good sense of humour, and definitely an excellent voice.

So stay tuned, because HIHS will be crowning its first ever HI Idol soon. (:

Next, I'd like to take this opportunity to dispell 3 myths I have heard about HI Idol 2007.

Myth #1: "The closing date for HI Idol 2007 is 22 January 2007."

Not really? Now, 22 January 2007 is the last day of application and submission for the HI Idol 2007 Logo & Set Design Competition (read the previous blog entry carefully), NOT the main competition involving aspiring singers. The HI Idol Student Media Team (a pretty talented group of students I am working with) will announce the winner/s of the Logo & Set Design Competition BEFORE it releases more information about the main competition.

Myth #2: "HI Idol 2007 is a singing competition with a Group/Band category."

No... It is not. HI Idol 2007 is quite UNLIKE Superband 2006 (Ooooh, I love Qi:Nobe!), and follows a format that is more similar to Singapore Idol & Project Superstar. Stay tune to more information about the format!

Myth #3: "The organisers of HI Idol 2007 has signed up all the competitors/contestants/participants/singers it needs."

Uh, how can this be possible, especially when we have yet to announce the registration process? -_-"

My conclusion: I understand that quite a few of you are really keen to hit the stage and unleash your talents. Rest assured that your time will come! Besides, many people (thank you bibs & old head!) are currently busy working behind the scenes to make this unique event happen.

Therefore, I would advise you and everyone else interested in HI Idol 2007 to remain patient and await more official announcements. (:

Feeling bored? Or that your works of art are being neglected? Having ideas stored in your mind but just totally unappreciated? Well then, here's your best chance to prove your worth and get recognised! People who have a penchant for designing and creating stuff should definitely sign up for the HI Idol Logo & Set Design Competition! Give yourselves a challenge and pit yourselves against other creative designers!

So what about the qualifications? Anyone from HIHS is welcome to join this unique competition that is available in only our school! You can approach Ms. Jacqueline Nai to pick up a copy of the official application form. Alternatively, you may also choose to approach Ms. Jill Lee. Participation in this competition as an individual is not compulsory. Entering as a group will also be a feasible choice! This means double the fun and excitement!

All you have to do is fill up the form with your or your team's particulars, attach your A4-size proposal and hand it in to either one of the teachers mentioned above! However, please be well aware of the rules stated on the forms before handing in your proposal. Any violation of the rules will result in disqualification. All entries are to be handed in by 22 January 2007 (this is the last day of application and submission), and decisions made by the judges will be final.
